NNSA-NSI 5G and Nuclear Nonproliferation: Crossroads to Explore Threats and Opportunities

 

The National Security Institute is partnering with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to host a workshop, 5G and Nuclear Nonproliferation: Crossroads to Explore Threats and Opportunities, on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at 1PM – 5PM ET.  

This workshop brings together technical experts and other participants from the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Enterprise, industry partners and NSI policy experts to discuss potential threats and opportunities in nuclear and radiological security space from adoption, integration, and exposure to 5G technology deployment.

1:00 – 2:25 PM: Opening Session and Introduction of Key Issue Areas

  • Overview of 5G and its Known Strengths and Weaknesses:
    • Introduction to 5G: How it Works, Market Analysis, Fact vs. Fiction
    • Key 5G Opportunities: “Known” Advantages & Disadvantages
    • Key 5G Current Risks and Lessons Learned
  • Nuclear Security Overview and its Intersection with 5G

2:40 – 4:25 PM: Break Out Sessions

  • Break Out Session 1: Nuclear Facilities in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle
  • Break Out Session 2: Transportation of Nuclear/Radiological Materials
  • Break Out Session 3: Commercial Facilities/Industries Utilizing Nuclear/Radiological Materials
