Dirk Maurer

Dirk Maurer is the Vice President for Strategic Account Development at Layer 8 Security, a cyber risk management, compliance, and consulting firm. He is also Of Counsel at MNB Meridian Law, LTD, a government practice focused law firm.

Previously, Mr. Maurer served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Defense Continuity and Mission Assurance, where he was responsible for continuity of government, mission assurance, counterterrorism, and critical infrastructure protection policy. Prior to that, he served as the DASD for Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction, where he was responsible for providing policy guidance for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear protection, weapons of mass destruction countermeasures, WMD counterproliferation and non-proliferation, and the Cooperative Threat Reduction Program (formerly known as the Nunn-Lugar program).

Mr. Maurer has also previously served as DASD, Crisis Management and Defense Support of Civil Authorities, and on the professional staffs of the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, and the House Committee on Homeland Security. He has served on the personal staffs of Senators Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Susan Collins, and Jim Bunning. He retired from the Marine Corps after 20 years of active and reserve service. He served in Operations Desert Shield/Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Mr. Maurer received his BA in Political Science from the University of Washington, his JD from Georgetown University Law Center, and his MS in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. He is a member of the Virginia Bar.
