Gus Coldebella serves as the EVP, Chief Legal Officer, and Corporate Secretary of Circle Internet Financial, where he is responsible for all legal, compliance, regulatory and government affairs for the company.
Gus spent four years at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, serving as its acting General Counsel from 2007 to 2009, and its Deputy General Counsel from 2005 to 2007, focusing on all major security issues confronting the nation. As the department’s top lawyer, he reported directly to Secretary Michael Chertoff, oversaw DHS’s responses to congressional oversight, spearheaded development of regulations, interacted with members of Congress and their staffs, worked on security-related issues with the White House and other executive branch agencies, managed the department’s varied litigation portfolio, supervised the over 1,700 lawyers at DHS and its components, and restructured the legal function to better meet the Department’s needs. During this time, he helped lead implementation of President Bush’s Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative, designed to shore up the government’s civilian networks from attack and to promote information sharing and cooperation on between the public and private sectors.
Gus also brings decades of experience in private practice, counseling clients on governmental and internal investigations, crisis management, complex business litigation, securities and corporate governance litigation, and some of the most complex technology-driven risk issues facing global corporations today. Gus was a member of the National Law Journal’s inaugural class of “Cybersecurity Trailblazers” in 2015.
Gus is a graduate of Colgate University, where he currently serves on its Board of Trustees as its Audit and Risk Committee chair, and received his J.D. magna cum laude from Cornell Law School. He is on Twitter @g_co.
