Thanks for joining us for a conversation with Congressman Mike Waltz, U.S. Representative for Florida’s 6th Congressional District, who shared his insight on critical national security issues ranging from China’s growing threat as a military, economic, and space power to its complicated ties to Wall Street and its treatment of the Uyghurs. Rep. Waltz also explored other important issues such as U.S efforts to halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the impact of the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan for peace and stability in the region.

 

 

Speaker Bios: 

Congressman Mike Waltz has represented Florida’s 6th congressional district since 2019.  Mike is a proud Florida native, a Colonel in the National Guard, a combat-decorated Green Beret, former White House and Pentagon policy advisor, and a small business owner.  He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute, has served over 24 years in the U.S. Army, and is presently serving in the National Guard. As a Green Beret, Congressman Waltz served worldwide as a decorated Special Forces officer with multiple combat tours in Afghanistan, the Middle East and Africa. For his actions in combat, Mike was awarded 4 Bronze Stars and 2 with valor. He is also the first Green Beret to be elected to Congress.  Mike’s servant leadership continued in the Pentagon as a defense policy director for Secretaries of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates. He then went on to serve in the White House as Vice President Dick Cheney’s counterterrorism advisor.  In 2020, Mike was promoted to the rank of Colonel. Congressman Waltz is the author of, “Warrior Diplomat: A Green Beret’s Battles from Washington to Afghanistan.”

 

Jamil N. Jaffer is the Founder and Executive Director of the National Security Institute, and an Assistant Professor of Law and Director of the National Security Law & Policy Program at the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University.  Jamil is also Senior Vice President for Strategy, Partnerships & Corporate Development at IronNet Cybersecurity, a technology products startup founded by Gen (ret.) Keith B. Alexander, the former Director of the National Security Agency and Founding Commander of U.S. Cyber Command.  In addition, Jamil is an advisor to Beacon Global Strategies, a strategic advisory firm; 4iQ, a deep and dark web intelligence startup; Duco, a technology platform startup that connects corporations with geopolitical and international business experts; and Amber, a digital authentication and verification startup.
