As Senior Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer for Southern Company, Tom Wilson manages enterprise cybersecurity risk and partners with business leaders to strengthen the company’s cybersecurity resilience. In addition, Wilson engages in regional, national, and international initiatives to advance cybersecurity resilience of the energy sector worldwide.
Wilson has more than 30 years of experience leading multiple technology functions with cybersecurity experience dating back to the late 1990s. For more than 18 years he has collaborated with company executives, Board directors, and industry leaders to raise Southern Company’s, as well as the energy sector’s, cybersecurity maturity.
With a focus on regional and national security, Wilson works with U.S. federal intelligence and law enforcement agencies to protect critical U.S. infrastructure. Wilson has been involved in numerous strategic industry initiatives in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy and national laboratories. Wilson has engaged with energy and critical infrastructure companies in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, and Asia to share intelligence and best practices and has presented at both national and international events.
At the regulatory and policy level, he regularly consults with state public service commissions, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the Department of Energy (DOE). Wilson’s work with Congressional members and staff, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Business Roundtable, the Bipartisan Policy Center, and Edison Electric Institute has helped influence national security policy. He engages internationally through the World Economic Forum, the Nuclear Threat Initiative, and other venues to drive international cybersecurity policy and energy sector resilience.
Wilson holds a bachelor’s degree in management information systems from the University of Georgia and completed Harvard Business School’s General Management Program.
