Recently, U.S. defense and military leaders have spoken publicly about critical issues facing the defense community, including diversity and domestic extremism.  Bishop Garrison, Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Defense, joins us to discuss diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts within the DoD and in the ranks, as well as his work coordinating the Countering Extremism Working Group.

About Bishop Garrison:

Bishop M. Garrison, Jr. currently serves as the Senior Advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Defense on Human Capital and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion issues.  Previously, he served as the Director of National Security Outreach at Human Rights First, an organization dedicated to the representation and advocacy of refugees and asylum seekers.  He was also co-Founder and President of the Joseph Rainey Center for Public Policy, a small Washington, DC think tank.  He served in multiple national security positions in the Obama Administration to include Advisor to the Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).  In this capacity, he worked for the Under Secretary in several roles involving large-scale and highly visible issues of policy and process.  These efforts included serving as the Executive Director of the Homeland Security Science and Technology Advisory Committee as well as a role as Deputy Lead on a TSA Blue Ribbon Panel that reviewed the airline passenger screening system.  Following his time in the Administration, he served as the Deputy Foreign Policy Adviser on the Presidential campaign of Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton.  For his military services, Bishop earned two Bronze Stars, a Combat Action Badge, and a Meritorious Service Medal.  He is also an Operation Iraqi Freedom Army veteran.  Bishop’s civilian accolades and awards include the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service, the DHS S&T Under Secretary’s Award for Outstanding Collaboration as well as participation as a member of the Obama Administration’s National Security Leadership Workshop, a program aimed at developing future leaders of the national security community.  Bishop is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
